Forefoot Pain….Part 3.

By Alix Shutello It’s marathon training time! And as a result of my training…..every conceivable ache and pain is plaguing me. As a distance runner, I’ve had every conceivable injury known to man; I’ve been to physical therapy for patellar pain, post op therapy for both knees, and a shoulder injury (that one was yoga related; who knew you could dislocate your shoulder doing yoga?). I have worked through my own hamstring and plantar faciatis issues. However, last year when I posted two articles on metatarsal pain, I was pleasantly surprised to learn I wasn’t alone in dealing with this issue. Logging the…

Janet-Hamilton

By Janet Hamilton, MA, RCEP, CSCS ACSM-Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist First things first – injuries happen for a reason. Sometimes it’s hard to determine what the underlying causes are but there are always factors involved in the onset of the injury. Generally there are several things involved; and more often than not it will take several interventions to get the problem resolved. There are some factors that are so often present in the onset of injuries that they seem to be the first place to look when you’re searching for the cause. Let’s do a quick overview of the…

Pain in Your Feet May Be Due To Your Shoes (or Lack Thereoff) – Not Your Training. by Alix J. Shutello It’s summer time! Good for your mood, bad for your feet. And if you are a woman who wears high heels all the time, you may be harming your feet year-round. Look, I’m a corporate mom and a runner. I’ve had every conceivable injury known to man; I’ve been to physical therapy for patellar pain, post op therapy for both knees, and a shoulder injury (that one was yoga related; who knew you could dislocate your shoulder doing yoga?).…

Metatarsalgia and Other Foot Swelling Issues

Alix J. Shutello   It is safe to say that for the last two months I have not been training. I have been dealing with the heat and cross training by cycling, swimming, tennis, and yoga.  Randomly, when I wake up in the morning it feels like there is a bubble in my right foot. I’ve been ignoring of course, because it doesn’ t hurt….or at least it didn’t until this morning.   When I got out of be this morning my foot hurt and the “bubble” on the bottom of my foot was more like a balloon.       As you can see,…

If Your Knees Hurt, You’re Either Running Too Much and/or You are Overweight.

May 17, 2010

This weekend I had the pleasure of interviewing a potential client who described himself as overweight. He’s done a great job by losing 26 pounds in the past year – and with another 30 pounds or so to go, he’s got his work cut out for him. But this runner is very dedicated and I don’t doubt he’ll lose the weight he wants to; that’s if he can get past his knee issues. Knees are sensitive and the more weight you carry around, the more pressure you are putting on your joints. When you run you exacerbate the potential for…

Hamstring Injury

January 9, 2008
By

Well – today is my birthday and I am celebrating it with a hamstring injury.  It’s time to buck up on this blog and get down to why this blog is called “Tight Hams.” I have tight hamstrings and like most runners, I am prone to injury just like everyone else. I am pretty sure I hurt my hamstring while weight lifting but it may have been that I strained it before I started lifting and in the process of lifting weights, really got that tear going. It looks like rest, massage, and ice are the best remedies for this…
