Running Pregnant is OK!

In my first blog post ever, I wrote an article entitled, Running Pregnant – Before, During, and After Baby – It’s A No Brainer for Runners, in 2008. It became one of my most popular posts and basically was the inspiration behind launching Runners Illustrated.  In the article, I reminisced about how I ran the 2002 San Diego Marathon two months pregnant. Women from around the world commented on the post and I thought, gee I am onto something here. As we move our way from Spring to Summer, and because I am surrounded by 3 pregnant women at work, I figured it was a…

Endurance Racing is About Passion, Not About the Distance

Dr_JoAnn

By Dr. JoAnn Dahlkoetter http://www.drjoann.com/ To run the big endurance races, or any race for that matter, you must be motivated, inspired and hungry for success, results, and the satisfaction that you become the best athlete you can be. Endurance athletes in particular are driven by the challenge to push their bodies beyond what is possible. Why? Because they believe they can because they were inspired or motivated in some way to drive themselves to a goal that seems unattainable to most. We often read about athletes overcoming physical disabilities. Lance Armstrong survived testicular cancer and won the Tour de…

Mental Pre-Race Visualization Benefits

By Wayne Kurtz, Founder of RaceTwitch.com Reposted With Permission We have all heard about the benefits of pre-race visualization, but the question is how many athletes actually add it to their overall training plan. Last year as I was preparing for a Double Iron Triathlon (Double the Ironman distance) I spent several weeks visualizing a previous great race performance. The results worked exceptionally well. Every evening I spent a few minutes listening to several MP3 files that were created to review my previous best race performances. The key was to embed in the mind how I felt, what I saw…

Another Year Older – So What?

January 9, 2011
By
Me in Grenada, Spain

Ok, today, January 9th is my birthday and today I am not so much celebrating that I’ve made it another year, but I am celebrating that as I age, my running seems to get better. I know it’s because I am older and somewhat wiser. At least that’s what I’m telling myself. I keep reading and studying the science of running; in particular, all the types of therapies, training programs, and other scientific advancements in the field of Sports and Technology.  It’s amazing how many different ways to increase flexibility, strength train, and run faster.  And everyone’s making suggestions about…

Guest Editorial: Why Flexibility Is So Important

By Cathy Walker, CFT Athletes, runners in particular, are prone to getting tight. I found that by working on certain stretching techniques, I was able to dramatically change the performance of some of my clients. I became certified in Fascial Stretch Therapy™ (FST™), Stretch to Win method, a unique system of therapy and training that dramatically improves flexibility by lengthening fascia. Fascia is a three-dimensional web of connective tissue that permeates the body from head to toe, front to back. It extends from the surface of the muscle down to the cellular level, connecting everything to everything. I became certified in…

Do You Think About Running All the Time?

Do You Think About Running All the Time? The answer to that would be yes By Alix Shutello Every second of every day, I seem to think about something related to running and/or training. I think that with a family and a full time job at Sage Communications, managing Runners Illustrated, and my never ending training schedule, my time is limited. My training must be strategically planned so that I have time for it; and I have learned that working out in the mornings drains me, while working out in the evenings invigorates me. What I love about running is…

Pregnant Runner Gretchen

Running pregant and post partum does have its setback and hazards – but baby and your body should always come first by Alix Shutello Gretchen Lynch was happy with her performace after completing the 2010 Marine Corps Marathon 8 weeks pregnant. “I didn’t overdo it, and slowed down when I needed to,” the Fairfax County, VA elementary music teacher reported. Lynch, who trained and ran races while pregnant with her daughter, Susanna, now 20 months old did not expect any problems with her pregnancy after the marathon and expected to just start training again. That plan soon changed.  A few days after…
